Project
Overview

I partnered with another designer to renovate the shopping experience for the mobile SDK app. I mainly focused on the store selection, product browsing and product filtering pages. The other designer focused on the product details page, cart and checkout screens.

Problem Statement

  • Method to change store location is not obvious

  • Inconsistent category graphics

  • Sales are hidden

  • Lack of product filtering

Goals

  • Add product filtering

  • Easy access to sales

  • Replace category graphics

  • Create a visual archetype for consistency across the app

Research

We researched competitor applications and interfaces like Kodak Moments, Shutterfly and Artifact Uprising to see what worked and what didn’t. Then we looked at other sites and apps such as Target, Starbucks, Jcrew and Westelm to see how they handle their product filtering.

Early Concepts

The design team met regularly with the ordering apps team to review our design progress with the product owner, delivery manager and lead developer. The design team would then use that feedback to decide on specific actions to take to update the design.

Select Store Location Redesign

  • On the ‘Pickup or Delivery?’ page, we replaced the graphics with icons and enlarged the buttons. Now the focus is on ‘Pickup Today’ and ‘Delivery. Before it was hard to differentiate the options.

  • On the ‘Select Store Location’ page, we enlarged the buttons and stacked them into a column instead of two columns. The new layout provides a cleaner look and a better fit for wider logos. Having more white space helps distinguish logos from each other and it makes to browse through the options.

  • We changed the popup of the search results to a full screen, so the steps flowed better together.

Home Page Redesign

  • We made it easier to change the store location. Before the change store option was hidden in the product details page and in the checkout process.

  • In the old design, the deals were hidden under a tab bar. We got rid of the tab bar and displayed the deals in carousel with nice photos that calls people’s attention.

Filter Products Redesign

  • The old design didn’t have a way to filter through products. So, we added filters to help make product browsing easier.

  • It helps people get through the shopping process easier. So, they can spend more time customizing their photo product.

Conclusion

With these updates, we aim to help users find the products they want more easily through product filtering. The new category graphics will also make it simple for users to distinguish between different product categories like mugs, photobooks, and etc.
